“I’ve been calling for a long time and my voice is tired and dry
It seems the only answer is the one that comes back silently
At least it feels that way to me”
These lyrics come from a song Jon and I wrote recently called “Once or Twice”. It has been quite a journey thus far for this little song. I definitely feel like it has something special going for it. There have been a lot of songs over the years and many that I really love but if our songs were the Jackson family, I think this one is most definitely Michael/
Inspiration from ‘nothing’
This song came about from wanting to shake up the process a bit. Jon and I hadn’t written in a few months and the week before, we had gotten back together and we wrote a song that was good, not great. It felt like shaking the dust off. When we got back together the following week to write again, I wanted to try a few different things. For one, I wanted to revisit a process we had played with a few times previously where we started with a seemingly meaningless title. An example of this process is our song “Best Of”, which literally started from seeing those words on the front of an L.P.. Although a seemingly meaningless title, it ended up being a song about showing people only the greatest hits of me and wondering what they would think if they saw my deep cuts. What I love about this process is that you end up finding the truth within the song from a more roundabout way and it always ends up leading to a truth that is important to me but that I didn’t realize I was thinking about.

From ‘nothing’ to Once or Twice
With “Once or Twice”, the title came from opening a book to a random page and picking the most innocuous phrase I could find. In the writing, I realized I was writing about wanting, after years and years of working as an artist, for the world to take notice on a deeper level…just maybe Once or Twice. Below is the song as it currently stands. I am playing all instruments and Marc T. Engberg is rocking the vocals. And if you are in the mood for a more acoustic vibe, check this version out.
See “Once or Twice” played LIVE…once or twice!!
